Description
Pure Cocoa/Cacao: Refers to the product in a natural, minimally processed form, without the added sugar, milk, or other additives found in standard commercial chocolate chips. The terms cacao and cocoa can be used interchangeably, but cacao often implies a less processed, raw product.
Natural: Emphasizes the lack of artificial ingredients or excessive chemical processing (like alkalization, also known as Dutch processing).
Baking Chips: Describes their intended use and form, which can be actual pre-formed chips that are designed to hold their shape, or crushed pieces of the cacao bean called nibs. Melting: Unlike standard chocolate chips which melt into a smooth, gooey texture, pure cocoa chips/nibs retain their shape and provide a distinctive crunch during baking.
Health Benefits: Because they are minimally processed and unsweetened, they are high in antioxidants, fiber, magnesium, and other beneficial compounds, making them a popular superfood alternative to regular chocolate.
Leavening (if powder form is used): If a recipe calls for natural cocoa powder (which is sometimes marketed as “baking chips powder” in some contexts), its acidity will react with baking soda to help baked goods rise. This is not a concern when using chip or nib form.
