Appearance: The pods are large, tough, dry, and wrinkled, typically measuring 2 to over 5 cm in length.
Color: The exterior of the pod is dark brown to black, a color it acquires during the traditional drying process over an open fire, which also imparts its characteristic smoky aroma.
Contents: Each capsule-shaped pod is trilocular (three-chambered) and contains many small, dark-colored, sticky seeds.
Plant: The plant itself is a perennial herb with subterranean rhizomes, growing aerial leafy shoots that can reach 1.7 to 2.6 meters in height.
