Appearance: The spice consists of large, dark brown to black colored seed pods that are tough, dried, and have a wrinkled skin.
Size: Black cardamom pods are significantly larger (4 to 6 times the size) than the more common green cardamom pods.
Contents: Each pod is spindle-shaped and triangular in cross-section, containing several small, dark-colored seeds. 

Flavor and Aroma
Badi elaichi is known for its distinct and potent sensory profile, which is very different from green cardamom. 
Aroma: It has a strong, pungent, and intensely aromatic scent with a unique smoky and camphor-like character. This smokiness comes from the traditional method of drying the pods over an open fire.
Flavor: The taste is bold, earthy, and warm, often described as having notes of mint or menthol, but is not bitter.
