Description
Cloves (Laung)
Cloves are the dried, unopened flower buds of the evergreen tree Syzygium aromaticum.
Appearance: They are nail-shaped and dark brown with a reddish tinge. The name “clove” comes from the Latin word clavus, meaning “nail,” due to their shape.
Aroma and Flavor: They have a very strong, intensely aromatic, and pungent flavor, primarily from a compound called eugenol.
Uses: Cloves are widely used as a spice in various cuisines around the world, for both sweet and savory dishes, such as curries, baked hams, and desserts. They are also used in traditional medicine, particularly for toothaches, because of their natural anesthetic properties.
